General information

  • Please allow 1 hour for your medical appointment and an extra 30 minutes for your X-ray if this is required. We schedule the X-ray appointment immediately following your medical. Your blood tests will be conducted during your medical appointment

  • The medical examination you need depends on your circumstances.

    General medical examinations:

    You must have a general medical examination if you are not:

    • the partner or dependent child of a New Zealand citizen or resident

    • a refugee, or the partner or dependent child of a refugee

    • applying for a resident visa under the Refugee Quota Family Reunification Category

    • applying for an Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Limited Visa.

    Limite medical examinations:

    You must have a limited medical examination if:

    • you are a refugee, or the partner or dependent child of a refugee

    • you are applying for a resident visa under the Refugee Quota Family Reunification Category

    • your partner or parent is a New Zealand citizen or resident and you were not able to be included in their residence application — partners must have been living together in a genuine and stable partnership for 12 months or more.

  • Your medical encompasses the following:

    • Digital photo

    • Health questionnaire

    • Client declaration

    • Blood tests (if needed)

    • Biometric measurements, which include a vision test, height, weight, and blood pressure

    • Urine test (if necessary)

    • A physical examination conducted by the doctor

    You may be asked to remove some clothing items, so we recommend wearing loose attire.

    If an X-ray is deemed necessary, we will have scheduled the appointment immediately following your medical examination.

    If you are aged 70 or above, a brief assessment of your cognitive function may be required."

At your appointment

    • Your passport as your medical or X-ray cannot proceed without presenting your passport. It is Immigration's primary and preferred form of identification, and a verified copy is not accepted. For information on accepted identity documents in New Zealand or Australia, please refer to the relevant guidelines.)

    • Australian Visa applicants should bring their HAP referral letter or upload a copy when scheduling their appointment.

    • Relevant medical information, including medication lists, dosages, specialist letters, and results.

    • Glasses or contact lenses (if you usually wear them)

    • If you are under 18 years old, please bring a parent or guardian.

    • An interpreter if you do not understand or speak English.

    • If you are pregnant, bring a letter from your primary carer with estimated due date.

  • On the day of your test, please eat and drink as normal. Ensure that you consume fluids beforehand as a urine test may be conducted. However, please refrain from consuming Kava for 48 hours before your blood tests.

  • As part of the NZ Visa medical, women are required to undergo a urine test, which should indicate no presence of blood, protein, or glucose. It's important to note that during your menstrual period, the presence of blood may lead to a positive test result.

    If you are currently menstruating, you can still proceed with the medical examination. However, there is a possibility that we may need to recall you for a urine test after your period has concluded, and this additional test will incur no extra cost.

  • If you need to reschedule your appointment, please contact us directly or use the link provided in your booking confirmation email. It is essential to provide a minimum of 24 hours' notice for appointment cancellations. Failure to do so will result in a $100 cancellation fee.

    Additionally, please ensure you bring your valid passport to the appointment, as we cannot proceed with the medical examination without the original passport. Failure to present the passport will also incur the $100 cancellation fee.

  • Yes, you will be offered the choice of a female chaperone when you see a male doctor.

  • You are not required to book your chest x-ray appointment separately. The appointment will be scheduled for you to immediately follow your medical appointment. By default, the x-ray appointment is automatically arranged at Wellington Imaging (formerly Horizon Radiology), Level 1, 61 Taranaki Street, Wellington, unless specified otherwise.

    If you prefer to have your x-ray appointment at Pacific Radiology, please reach out to us before your scheduled appointment so that we can make the necessary arrangements. Pacific Radiology is located at Level 1, 142 Lambton Quay, Wellington.

After your appointment

  • Our goal is to submit your medical to Immigration within 2-3 working days once your blood test results become available. Once your medical is submitted, you will receive confirmation from Immigration via email.

    In the event that additional reports or tests are necessary, we will assist you in coordinating and arranging these as needed.

  • Upon receiving an email request, we will send you a copy of your medical once Immigration confirms receipt.

    In the event that any abnormalities or concerns are identified in your medical or chest x-ray, our medical staff will contact you via email.

  • Unfortunately, we do not offer GP (General Practitioner) services for follow-up care after the medical examination. However, we can provide guidance on nearby medical centers for your convenience.

What tests do I need for a NZ Visa?
