Frequently Asked Questions

General Information
If you do not need an XRay, the appointment takes between 1 and 1.5 hours.

If you do need an XRay, it normally takes between 1.5 and 2 hours- that is, from your appointment time, till you have finished your Xray.
We complete the eMedical with you- this includes a health questionnaire, a declaration (which is a legal statement you need to sign), some “biometrics” measurements by the nurse or doctor (such as a vision test, height and weight and blood pressure), and a physical exam by the doctor.

People who are 5 years or older also need other tests, which are all included in the price and will be done in the same appointment- see below:

  • 5 to 10 years: urine test
  • 11 to 14 years: urine test and may need Chest Xray
  • 15 to 69 years: urine test, blood test and may need Chest Xray
  • 70 years and older: urine test, blood test, brain function test and may need an XRay

*If you need an XRay, we will have arranged it for you to be done straight after your medical.
Our services are designed to give you the best possible service- and save you time and money.

Our prices cover everything needed to get your eMedical submitted to Immigration, as long as your test results are normal: – including:
  • taking your digital photos for you
  • doing all the data entry in eMedical system
  • f you need blood tests and urine tests, we do these for you at our clinic, saving you time
  • your XRay (which we arrange for you if you need one)
  • we complete and submit the eMedical and advise you of the results.

Extra charges will apply if you need:
  • extra tests that may be required to help your medical get approval by Immigration NZ
  • dementia tests for people over 70
  • a doctor consultation if the medical is complicated and you need to discuss the results
  • follow-up services you need after we have submitted your medical to Immigration
  • a fee for an “Urgent medicals” (Completion of your medical within 2 working days of your call)

Payment – is required on the day we see you, and payment for any extra tests is required before we complete your medical
Discounts may apply for the Immigration Medical Examination if:
  • You have been to us for a medical before, or
  • You book together as a couple or family group, or
  • You are a student, AND
  • You do not miss the first appointment time you make with us.

Discounts are at our discretion.
We provide medical assessments. We do know the basic rules that apply to visa applications, but we are not part of the Immigration Department, and it is important that you speak with Immigration New Zealand so you are sure about what checks you need, and when you need them.

If your situation is complicated, you may prefer to speak to an independent Immigration Agent. We have a list of some agents on our website.
We can usually arrange a medical certificate and results within 1-2 working days - an extra charge applies.
Changing or cancelling your appointment:
Please ring us as soon as you can if you have to cancel or change your appointment.

If you do not show up for your appointment, or you give us less than 1 working days notice that you need to change or cancel your appointment, then you will be charged a re-booking fee of $100, and you will need to pay an advance deposit of $100 on your next appointment, and you will not be entitled to any discount that may be offered at the time.
At your appointment
  • Your passport (you will not be able to do your medical or XRay if you do not show your passport).
  • Medical information (such as specialist letters and results) if you have had serious health problems in the past.
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you use them.
  • A parent or guardian if you are under 16
  • An interpreter (translator) if your English is poor.
You should eat and drink normally on the day of your test. You need to drink fluids beforehand because you will need to do a urine test, and the blood tests are “non-fasting” blood tests these days.
Having a cold does not normally affect the medical or the blood test or XRay, but if think you have influenza, please call us, because we do not want you to spread this infection to us or others.
Women need to have a urine test as part of the medical, and this test must show no blood, protein or glucose. During your period, the blood will show up as a positive test. Please call us to discuss the choices, but basically, there are two options:
  • You can have the medical, but you will have to come back for a urine test when your period finishes- this only takes a couple of minutes and you do not need an appointment if you come back between 08.30 and 17.00 on Monday to Friday. OR
  • You can call us to change your appointment so that you come in after your period finishes.
The doctor has to make sure you are healthy, so when the doctor examines you, you will need to take most of your clothes off, but you leave your underwear on. That is, men leave their underpants on, women leave their bra and underpants/knickers on. So when you come for your appointment, please make sure you wear underwear under your normal clothes. You may leave head coverings on for the examination as long as the doctor is still able to check your eyes, and ears, as well as the skin on your head if the doctor needs to.
The doctor checks:
  • your questionnaire answers- and may ask for more details
  • your ears, eyes, mouth and throat
  • your heart and breathing
  • a breast examination is required for women over 50 but not if they can provide a mammogram results from the previous 12 months. Occasionally, a breast examination may be needed for younger women who have had a history of significant breast problems
  • check your abdomen (stomach)
  • check your lower legs
  • if you have had certain health problems in the past, the doctor may need to check other things such as lymph glands in your groin (if this is necessary, the doctor will explain why).
Yes. If you are examined by a male doctor, you may have a female staff member with you during the examination (called a "chaperone") if you would like it.
After your appointment
We are trying to help you get approval from Immigration as quickly as possible, so about 90% of the time we will complete the medical and send it to Immigration on-line within 2-3 working days.

A few people have problems with the medical examination or the results, and if this is not sorted out, this can delay the process within Immigration, so we will help you so that we provide them with any extra information as quickly as possible. This might involve old specialist reports, or another blood or urine test. Sometimes this involves extra cost to you. We will advise you about this.
Our doctor will email you as soon as they have checked all your results, and will be happy to send you copies of your results. If the results of the medical examination or results are not normal, we will email or ring you and advise you the best way to proceed. You can choose to come in for an extra consultation if you need extra time to discuss results, but mostly this is not necessary.
More than 90% of people do not need extra tests.

But if there is something wrong with your standard blood tests, then Immigration NZ usually requires a test to be repeated. We will only suggest an extra test if we are sure that it will be required by Immigration.

And if you have a chronic health problem, our doctor may ask you to supply more information (for example, from previous specialists), or may suggest an extra blood or urine test. We do this to help get your application through Immigration more quickly.
There will only be extra charges if:
  • We recommend you do extra tests to make it quicker for Immigration to consider your application, and you agree to have the extra tests.
  • Immigration tells you to get more tests done.
  • You need long phone or face-to-face discussions with the doctor after the medical has been done.
No, we are not set up to provide gp services, but we can advise you about good doctors near where you live or work.
